Parents guide · family allowance
Family allowance in Luxembourg: how much, and until when.
In Luxembourg, every child is entitled to a family allowance, paid monthly by the Zukunftskeess (formerly CAE), from birth to 18. It is the same amount for every child, with an extra amount as they grow. The calculator below does the maths for your family, and we explain the rest without jargon. If a baby is on the way, also look at parental leave and its calculator.
Work out what you receive
Estimate based on each child’s age, using the official amounts in force. The exact amount is paid by the Zukunftskeess (formerly CAE).
How the amount is calculated
- A base amount per child per month, the same whatever the number of children.
- An extra amount from age 6, then a larger one from age 12.
- These amounts follow wage indexation: they go up when the index is applied. The calculator always uses the latest official amounts.
Back-to-school allowance and birth grants
On top of the monthly allowance, a back-to-school allowance is paid every August, without any request, for children over 6, then over 12 (official details). For a birth, birth grants are paid in three instalments (before, at and after the birth), on request, provided the scheduled medical checks were done (official conditions).
The grants are only part of what needs preparing before a birth: the leave, paperwork and benefits around a birth, in the order you will need them.
Who is entitled, and until when
The allowance is due from the month of birth if the child lives in Luxembourg, or if a parent works there (cross-border workers included). It stops at 18, unless the child continues secondary education or training: it can then continue up to 25.
You work in Luxembourg but live abroad
For cross-border workers, the country where the child lives pays first. Luxembourg then pays a top-up to reach its own amount, if it is higher. The result therefore also depends on your country's allowances: the official page for cross-border workers explains the steps.
And for their first Luxembourgish words?
Kawi introduces them through play, from 3 to 6, with a parent alongside.
