From précoce and Spillschoul

Your child's first Luxembourgish words, while having fun.

Your child is starting précoce or Spillschoul soon and doesn't hear Luxembourgish at home? The Kawi app helps them recognise words from the classroomroom through play, without reading, at their own pace.

At breakfast, Kawi shows an apple to a girl and her father.
The app's home screen: Kawi the squirrel at the Schueberfouer, with the Play button.
New to you too

Don't speak Luxembourgish? Learn it with your child.

Many parents discover Luxembourgish at the same time as their child. That's exactly what Kawi is for: you play together, you hear the real pronunciation, and the translation is there in your own language.

  • ✓ You discover the words right alongside them.
  • ✓ Translation in French, Portuguese, English and German.
  • ✓ A real moment together, not a screen that shuts you out.
  • ✓ You arrive prepared for that first day at school.
How it works

Listen, look, count, speak.

No reading, no pressure. Pictures, the official LOD.lu pronunciation, and every success celebrated.

The child listens

The official pronunciation from the LOD.lu dictionary, clear and true.

They touch the picture

They pick the right drawing. Got it wrong? No worries, we try again with no penalty.

They dare to say it

They repeat the word after Kawi, never judged. Every success is celebrated: a reason to want to come back tomorrow.

A path that grows with your child.

Six ways to learn, in the order a child builds a language: the ear first, reading last, and speaking all the way through.

Discover

The child touches a card and it says its word. No right or wrong answer: we explore, we listen.

Recognise

The voice says a word, the child touches the right picture. The heart of the game: hear, then point.

Sort

One or several? Which is the odd one out? The child sorts what they hear: grammar begins with the ear.

Listen to the sounds

Haus or Maus? A single sound apart. The ear sharpens: this is exactly what gets a child ready to read.

Read

Matching the written form to words they already know by ear. The game grows with them, all the way to their first words read.

Speak

Repeating after Kawi: hear the model, dare to say it, hear yourself. Never judged, and from day one: speaking doesn't wait for reading.

And every session follows the same little ritual:

  1. ReviewA gentle warm-up, on words already met.
  2. LearnWords never seen before, in free discovery.
  3. PractiseThe skill of the moment, to make it stick.
  4. ChallengeFinding the words in a big illustrated scene.

Short, predictable, with a real ending. The steps are a suggestion, never a wall: everything stays open, so a parent can explore and a child can dare.

Vocabulary that's useful from day one.

Short sessions

A few minutes are enough. A clear ending, no nudge to stay.

No traps

No ads, no autoplay, no streak to keep alive.

Together

Made to be played as a pair, and to point back to real life.

The screen-free version

Too little for a screen? There are cards too.

Kawi is first and foremost the app. If your child is still too young for screens, there's also a printable card version: you tap the word in the app, they point to the right card. Less screen, a real moment together.

A free sample: the Animals theme, in English. Every theme can be printed from the app.

A freshly printed sheet of Kawi cards, scissors and a few cut-out cards.

Free to start.

Try the games and several themes without paying a thing. The rest unlocks simply, for the whole family: a model shown clearly, with no traps or surprise purchases.

What parents ask.

I don't speak Luxembourgish, is that a problem?+
Quite the opposite. Kawi is designed so you learn at the same time as your child, with the translation in your own language. You progress together.
My child can't read yet.+
That's the whole point. Everything relies on pictures and sound. No reading is needed.
What age should we start?+
In practice between 3 and 6 years old, as soon as your child shows interest. Kawi is built for the précoce and Spillschoul years: everything goes through pictures and sound, never through reading.
What is précoce?+
In Luxembourg, précoce education is an optional year open from age 3, before the Spillschoul (cycle 1, compulsory from age 4). It's often a child's very first contact with Luxembourgish, and that's exactly the moment Kawi prepares for.
Does it replace the Spillschoul?+
No. The app helps your child get a head start and revise, but the real learning happens with the teachers and the other children. It's a complement.
How much time per day?+
A few minutes. The app is built for short sessions, with nothing designed to keep your child hooked. No streak to maintain.
